Make a newborn baby cardigan for summer.

Just over a week ago, I mentioned that I'd started a new knitting project. I just thought I'd give you an update on the finished article. In my previous post, you'll see I mentioned there are sometimes inaccuracies with the pattern's in the book I was using, in fact, the pattern was so wrong and I had to make so many amendments, I thought it wouldn't matter if I printed my version of it here!

Ok, so firstly, I used a pair of 3.25mm needles, approx 75g of wool (I used 2x 50g balls, but ended up with over half a ball left), 1 button and a needle to sew up the seams.

BACK: To start, cast on 62sts. I like to use cable cast on method for a neat finish.
Knit 4 rows and purl the 5th. Work in st st until the work measures just over 17cm from cast on edge.

SHAPE ARMS: Cast on 32sts at beginning of next 2 rows (126sts), then work in g st for 32 rows.

SHAPE RIGHT FRONT: Next row knit 55 and turn, leaving the remaining 71 sts on the needle.
SHAPE NECK: Row 1: K1, s1, k1, paso, k to end (54sts)
Row 2: k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (53sts)
Row 3: As row 1 (52sts)
Knit 13 rows without shaping.
Increasing row: K1, m1, k to end (53sts)
Knit 3 rows without shaping.
Continue inc. row at neck edge of next and 3 following alternate rows. (57sts)
Next row: K to last 2 sts, m1, k1.
Next row as increasing row. (59sts)
Next row: Knit

SHAPE BUTTONHOLE: Next row: Cast on 7 sts, k to end. (66sts)
Next row: K to last 5 sts, cast off 3sts, k2.
Next row: K2, cast on 3sts, k to end.

SHAPE UNDERARM: Cast off 36sts at the beginning of the next row, k to end. (30sts)
Next row K
Next row: K5, p to end.
Continue this pattern until the st st measures the length of the back of the garment from the underarm to garter stitched bottom edge.
Knit 4 rows in succession and cast off.

(**Alternatively you can leave the pattern at the underarm and begin working on the other side of the cardigan to make sure each side measures the same length as I have done in the photos)

SHAPE LEFT FRONT: Rejoin yarn at neck edge and cast off centre 16 sts, k to end.
Row 1: k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 (54sts)
Row 2: k1, s1, k1, paso, k to end (53sts)
Row 3: As row 1 (52sts)
Knit 12 rows without shaping.
Inc row: k1, m1, k to end (53sts)
Knit 3 rows without shaping.
Continue inc. row at neck edge of next and 3 following alternate rows. (57sts)
Next row: k to last 2 sts, m1, k1 (58sts)
Next row as inc row (59sts)
Next row: Knit
Next row: Cast on 7sts and k to end (66sts)
Knit 4 rows.

SHAPE UNDERARM: Cast off 36sts, k to end (30sts)
Next row: Knit
Next row: P to last 5 sts, K to end.
Continue this pattern until the st st measures the length of the back of the garment from the underarm to garter stitched bottom edge.
Knit 4 rows in succession and cast off.

Below is what the finished article should look like.
Now take a large blunt needle used for knitting, join the side and underarm seams using mattress stitch. Attach button to the top front of garment.
And there you have it, a lovely little summer cardigan for a baby girl!

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial, if you have any questions or comments drop me a note below!

Love Jo xxx
